Seed to Table Initiative Brings Residents Closer to Nature
An exciting new ‘Seed to Table’ initiative is bringing residents at Cheviot Nursing Home closer to nature, offering the opportunity to plant, grow and harvest fresh produce before enjoying it in their meals.
New raised beds have been installed in the gardens at Cheviot, creating accessible spaces where residents can enjoy growing fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year. The project was made possible thanks to the generous support of Aureos, a UK infrastructure and engineering company with a strong commitment to community volunteering, which donated both materials and skilled labour to help bring the initiative to life.
The raised beds offer far more than home-grown produce. Gardening encourages residents to spend time outdoors, stay active, connect with nature and enjoy shared experiences. From sowing seeds to harvesting fruits of their labour, residents can take pride in every stage of the growing journey whilst enjoying the well-being benefits that come with it.
A key part of the initiative is Cheviot’s longstanding partnership with Paxman Academy Junior School. Pupils will work alongside residents to sow seeds, care for plants and watch their crops flourish. Some of the raised beds will be tended by residents, while others will be cared for by the pupils, creating a rewarding intergenerational project that brings people together through a shared purpose.
The project has also welcomed a brand-new wormery, with worms travelling all the way from Yorkshire to help transform kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost. This natural compost will support future planting, helping the gardens thrive while promoting sustainability and reducing waste.
As the first seeds are planted, residents are looking forward to watching their gardens grow and enjoying the fruits of their labour in the months ahead.
